ALAN BOX LEVINE
Since childhood, with an early reverence for wood, Alan Box Levine has always had his feet in two rivers, as a craftsman and an artist.
Hitchhiking alone across North America in the 1970's, and later visiting England and Japan, Alan settled in northern California. He graduated from Sonoma State University with a degree in studio art, studying sculpture, print making, poetry, and tai chi chuan. After spending a decade on the west coast creating art and restoring furniture, he relocated to New York City to work as an exhibit builder, and traveled the country as a manager and roadie. Ten years later, he moved to south Florida, settling into a community of artists. Building upon his love of wood, with his skills as a craftsman, he created Cabinettes and assemblages and exhibited his works in galleries, museums, and craft fairs. His artwork hangs in private collections across the country.
Alan eventually landed in Virginia, and is currently pursuing and fabricating figurative sculptures, site-specific installations and mixed-media assemblages. His artwork combines a deep knowledge of his craft, an experienced and keen eye for composition and scale, and his passion as an artist and poet. Sculpture is his vehicle of expression - deconstructing complicated issues and discovering their history, grace, truth, and beauty.
